UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences Alumni Newsletter

LONDON'S GLOBAL UNIVERSITY
Alumni NEWSLETTER
FACULTY OF BRAIN SCIENCES | AUGUST 2015

Dear Alumni,

I would like to thank all those of you who took the time to respond to our survey about the development of our provision of professional, executive, CPD and short courses.

We were delighted to receive so many responses and wanted to take this occasion to share some of the key findings with you:

  • 82% of respondents said they were interested in participating in CPD activity for themselves and additionally 20% said they were interested for their company
  • 60% were interested in CPD with a specific career focus for all staff
  • 63% wanted to gain new skills
  • The most popular subject areas were Neuroscience (49%) and Research Methods (49%)
  • Respondents were quite equally matched in how they would like to receive CPD: 30% by distance learning and 31% by face to face tuition in London

Colleagues from across the Faculty have already been working closely with UCL’s newly launched
Life Learning team to explore ways to make some of the findings from the survey a reality, and I am very pleased to announce an exciting development from our Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (UCL DCAL).

The team of experts at DCAL have long identified issues around deaf awareness, as highlighted in a
recent report from London Assembly’s Health Committee, and are currently developing the UK’s first fully online, comprehensive deaf awareness course.

The course will provide a wealth of information including insights into deaf cultures around the world, supporting technologies, as well as aetiology and audiological aspects of deafness. Participants can actually see some assistive technologies in use rather than just learn the theory.

The course is in a modular format so participants or employers can choose what is most relevant for them, but completing the whole course will provide a holistic view of what life is like for the deaf. The fact it is online also means people can complete it whenever suits them, at their own pace. The course also explores issues from an international perspective so the content is relevant to anyone who can speak English.

Thank you again for giving us your time and sharing your views with us.

Best wishes,

Alan Thompson
